okay i have to say something now that i read an article more in depth & holy shit is this fucking disgusting. taken from this bbc article ;
āGiven the passions and feelings connected with the use of Irish Gaelic, there is a sad risk that the phrase would be regarded as some form of slogan or that its inclusion without translation would, of itself, be seen as a political statement,ā said Judge Stephen Eyre, QC, chancellor of the Diocese of Coventry.
he basically said that the entirity of the irish language is a political statement, that speaking it is a political act & putting these totally heartfelt worlds on the gravestone of an irish catholic woman who completely assimilated to english culture but wanted some memoriam of her culture in her childrenās wishes, is a political act.
Untranslated Irish words would be āunintelligible to all but a small minority of readersā, he ruled in his judgment for the Church of England consistory court on 6 May.
He authorised a memorial which included a translation of the phrase in English.
why does every passer by need to understand the words on a gravestone of somebody they donāt know? why was this even taken into account?
& you wanna know why it would be unintelligible to all but a small minority of readers? bc its IRISH ; a language the english tried for CENTURIES to wipe out. they punished people for speaking our cultureās language, they killed people for it. the amount of irish people who know their own cultureās language is horrifically small & itās entirely because of the racist onslaught the english perpetrated against us when they decided to try & wipe out our culture. also, why does it matter to anyone but the family what words are on THEIR MOTHERāS GRAVESTONE?
also, this battle has gone on for TWO YEARS. two years where this poor family has not been able to grieve properly for their beloved lost mother, where they canāt honour her with their culture & their language that they have probably fought to keep alive.
I hate, hate, HATE the term “affordable housing.” I hate that we’ve normalized it. I hate that we just accept that the majority of housing, a basic human right, is unaffordable to much of the population. Housing should be affordable as a baseline. If rich people want to add arcades and gold-platedhot tubs on top so be it, but everyone, everyone, regardless of income level, should have access to a clean, comfortable home with enough light and space to make life worth living.
It is funny that Hitlers last moments of life were pure misery and terror before he blew his own brains out, it is funny that Luis Carrero Blanco was blown up by a bomb so powerful it sent his car flying over a 3 story building, it is funny that Ronald Reagan got shot and that his wound led to health complications that plagued him for the rest of his vile life, it is funny that Margaret Thatcher lived in constant fear of assassination by the IRA, it is funny that Mussolini ended life looking like a prized ham in the deli section, and it is funny that Trump might die from covid.
bad things happening to history’s monsters will always be funny
